Terroir and varieties

The surrounding forest and hilly topography in this part of Provence, ranging in altitude from 650 to 1,000 feet, creates a climate with chillier winter temperatures and wider-ranging summer temperatures – hot days and cool nights – than are felt on the Mediterranean coast. The hills shelter the vineyard from maritime influences and weaken the mistral wind coming from the north, encircling Château Margüi in a unique microclimate.

The vineyard is located in a European network of protected areas known as Natura 2000, ensuring an uncommonly well-preserved natural environment. The organic wines are Ecocert-certified and have been so since the vineyards were replanted in 2000.

The vines grow on the hillsides, where the clay-limestone soil, diverse plant life, and moderate, thousand-foot altitude create a rich, pure terroir for grapes that give rise to wines of great finesse.

Grape

The main grape varieties are Syrah, Grenache Noir, Cinsault, Cabernet-Sauvignon, and Rolle. The wine range includes the Coteaux-Varois-en-Provence, an Appellation d’Origine Protégée (AOP) recognized in 1993, and Vin de Pays du Var, an Indication Géographique Protégée (IGP).

The late – but always balanced – maturity of the grapes gives Château Margüi wines a harmonious composition enhanced by an exquisite freshness.

The 51 acres of vineyards are harvested entirely by hand. The grapes are transported in small boxes and those for the whites and rosés are carefully placed in cold storage before being meticulously pressed.
